Woodturning
for mass-production that can be created with accurate precision and without the cost of having to employ any craftsmen. Despite this there is still a demand for Hand turned products as many people want unique items that arenng out the finer dust caused by turning and this fine dust can irritate the lungs.
- Ear Protection although not completely necessary as the lathe is not a high rev machine it can be quite noisy especially when using a roughing gouge to smooth down the wood for finer work. Ear muffs or plugs can be worn for this.
- Foot Protection. Sturdy boots should be worn at all times when woodturning as there is a chance that the wood being turned could come off the machine and land on the turners feet. Also the cutting tools could easily slip from the turners grasp and land on their feet.
Useful Woodturning Tips
- When sanding down a finished object on a lathe its a good idea to wear gloves as alot of heat is produced and can occasionally burn your hands
- As woodturning tools tend to wear down alot when in use it is a good idea to have two sets of tools so you can switch to your other set which saves having to sharpen the tools in the middle of trying to turn a piece
- If while using woodturning tools and they heat up to where the metal is burning the hand it is a good idea to have a cup of water nearby to quench the metal. (Sometimes the metal heating up alot can mean the tools need sharpening)
